An opticians on this corner since at least 1962
Stockport’s local history archive confirms an opticians at 416 Reddish Road from 1962, when J. Dowdy’s practice appears in the Manchester classified telephone directory; a year earlier he was practising a few doors along at number 450. The practice’s roots may go back further still, to the Goodman and Dowdy opticians of Reddish in the 1930s, and we are working with the archive to pin down the date.
The practice later became Dixon Optometrists, and in May 2025 it passed to Gohar Majid, who is building on that history with the specialist clinics that make an independent worth having. Around the practice you will find historic photographs of Reddish; if you have any of your own, we would love to see them.

What being independent means for you
Time
Appointments are not timed to a chain’s target. An eye examination takes as long as your eyes need, and questions are welcome.
Choice
We pick the lenses, frames and contact lenses we think are best, from any supplier. Nobody tells us what to sell.

The optometrist who examines you this year will examine you next year, and will remember you.
